Modeling, Simulation, and Data Farming
Referentia provides commanders and decision makers with actionable insights through modeling, simulation and an innovative operational analysis technique known as “Data Farming”. Initiated by the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory’s “Project Albert” program, the data farming process involves running simple models on supercomputers to explore large decision spaces rapidly. Referentia’s modeling, simulation and data farming capabilities include:
Distillation Modeling
- Using simple, abstract simulations or “distillations” to quickly model complex systems and examine emergent behavior
- Examining highly non-linear or interconnected systems
- Modeling intangibles such as bravery, trust, leadership, etc.
- Managing co-evolution and adaptation
- Focusing on rapidly generating insights into problems
Data Farming
- Data Farming uses high performance computing to explore vast parameter & value “landscapes”
- Agent-based distillation models can be run millions of times on supercomputers, literally “growing” meaningful data through exhaustive exploration of “what if” scenarios
- Exposes “surprise” areas of data, often in distribution tails and reveals threats, opportunities, and “one-in-a-million” possibilities
Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS)
- Agent-based distillation models embody the principles of CAS
- Simple, abstract, fast-running models are designed for rapid prototyping
- Can be applied to a wide variety of problems in many fields, including biology, psychology, economics, political science and the study of warfare
