Honolulu-based Referentia Systems Incorporated, a provider of innovative information technology (IT) solutions, has been selected as a 2016 recipient of the prestigious Tibbetts Award for small business innovation. In a ceremony today at the White House, the Small Business Administration (SBA) presented Referentia Systems with the award, named after Roland Tibbetts of the National Science Foundation. Tibbetts was the founder of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, which provides grants to small businesses for innovative research across a range of topics deemed to be of national importance. The Tibbetts Awards recognize companies that stand out as especially representative of the spirit and intent of the SBIR program, exemplifying the very best in SBIR achievements.
“It’s a great honor to be a recipient of the 2016 Tibbetts Award and to be nationally recognized for the drive and excellence of our people, which has resulted in successful commercial spinout companies,” said Referentia CEO Nelson Kanemoto. “The SBIR program has been instrumental in helping us bring innovations to market, and we’ve tried hard to follow the model Tibbetts intended. Our company is diverse, we strive for excellence, and we encourage community service. Without programs like SBIR, it would have been much more difficult for us to develop meaningful products that meet real world needs, especially as a small tech company headquartered in Hawaii.”
“We are proud to recognize your company’s work, that has contributed so greatly to the success of the SBIR program,” said John Williams, Director of Innovation and Technology for the Office of Investment and Innovation of the Small Business Administration. The selection of a Hawaii-based company to receive the Tibbetts Award represents a major win for Hawaii's high tech community and validates the long history of support for high tech in Hawaii by organizations such as the Department of Defense, state government, technology accelerators and incubators, and initiatives like Hawaii Technology Development Corporation (HTDC) providing a matching funds program for Hawaii SBIRs.
By leveraging SBIR grants Referentia has developed new products from concept to commercialization, successfully established spinout companies (LiveAction and in2lytics), and deployed its technologies to more than 650 enterprise customers worldwide including brand names such as Home Depot, Walmart, Target, BP, and the Department of Defense.
