Referentia Systems Incorporated Selected to Present “Best Practices” Session at eLearn 2006: the World Conference on eLearning
Show Goes On Despite Earthquake and Island-Wide Blackout
HONOLULU, HI – October 15, 2006 – Referentia Systems was selected to present a conference session on Best Practices for eLearning development at the eLearn 2006 World Conference on eLearning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare and Higher Education.
Unfortunately, the session, titled “User-Centric Approaches: Think Like the Learner, Not Like the Teacher” by Larry Lieberman, Referentia’s Director of Communications, was scheduled for Sunday morning October 15th, 2006. Earlier that morning, the Hawaiian islands were rattled awake by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that left the island’s population shaken, literally, and without power for most of the rest of the day.
The Sheraton Waikiki hotel’s emergency generators provided limited power for basic services such as elevators and emergency lights – but there was no power for the conference presentations. Event organizers and hotel management met to discuss the best course of action and decided to keep the event running as scheduled, even with no power, since most of the 1000+ attendees were basically sitting around with nothing else better to do.
“I’d consider this to be a very memorable presentation,” said Larry Lieberman after the event. “Not because of the content or topic I spoke about, but because of the circumstances under which it was delivered. My session turned out to be relatively well attended – but with no power to share our slides or demos it ultimately became an eLearning ‘talk story’ session with the attendees, who were glad to contribute their thoughts to the discussion.”
Power was restored to the hotel late that evening, and the conference continued on schedule for the remainder of the event.
